PORTABLE UV-C LIGHT EMITTER FOR SURFACES

ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

Ultraviolet (UV) light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and is classified into three subcategories according to its wavelength: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. Among these, UVC light (with a wavelength range between 220 and 300 nanometers) is used as a germicidal agent due to its ability to inactivate microorganisms. Its maximum efficiency is reached at 254 nm, where it achieves optimum disinfectant action.

UNBOXING | PORTABLE UV-C LIGHT EMITTER FOR SURFACES.

UV-C light deactivates bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa by damaging their DNA or RNA through a process called pyrimidine photodimerization. This phenomenon generates errors in gene transcription. As a result, microorganisms lose their ability to reproduce and infect.

UV-C DISINFECTION IS USED IN DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES:

  • Sanitary: Sterilization of operating rooms, medical equipment and air in hospitals.

  • Food: Treatment of drinking water, contact surfaces and packaging.

  • Domestic and Industrial: Air purifiers, HVAC systems and disinfection of personal items (e.g. telephones, face masks).

  • Research: Laboratories and pharmaceuticals to ensure sterile environments.

ADVANTAGES COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL METHODS

  • Efficiency: Eliminates up to 99.9% of pathogens without the need for chemicals.

  • Speed: Exposure requires seconds or minutes, depending on the intensity.

  • Low operating cost: It does not leave residues and reduces the use of disinfectants.

  • Versatility: Applicable on liquids, air and solid surfaces.

LIMITACIONES Y PRECAUCIONES

  • Human safety: Direct exposure to UV-C causes damage to skin (burns) and eyes (photokeratitis). Use in the absence of people or with shielded equipment is recommended.

  • Limited radiation: Does not pass through opaque materials (e.g. thick plastics), so it only disinfects exposed surfaces.

  • Microbial resistance: Some microorganisms (such as certain spores) require higher doses or prolonged times.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

  • Far-UV-C (Far-UV-C, 207-222 nm): Less harmful to human tissue but effective against pathogens, promising for public spaces.

  • UV-C LEDs: More energy efficient and longer life than traditional mercury lamps.

UV-C light is a powerful tool for disinfection, especially in contexts where sterility is critical. However, its implementation must be accompanied by safety protocols and proper design to maximize its benefits while minimizing risks.
